If you have been part of the Volumio community since the beginning, you’ve probably heard about and tried the app Sound@home for Volumio. This project was born pretty much at the same time the first versions of Volumio were released… and yes, a long time ago. Today I want to re-introduce this app given that a completely new version was just released, improving significantly its functionality. All done by one incredible mind and Volumio contributor, Diego Tafuto.

Sound@home is a native app available for all android devices. It allows full control of Volumio with many features available, and an important thing to mention: it is completely free!

I should point out this app is a part of something bigger. Diego has started Sound@home first, as a part of a project that he would like to cover, one step at a time, entire home automation, being passionate not only about Hi Fi music but also IoT.
But enough writing, let’s jump to the cool part and see all the things you can do with Sound@home app for Volumio, shall we?
Soundhome-volumio-playerA completely renovated User Interface making the app more intuitive and of course, good looking! And if you prefer to use your device horizontally, you can surely do it!

player-soundhome-music-volumio

Sound@home for Volumio App allows you to configure and control multiple Volumio devices in your home from the same App.
With one click you can search and automatically configure your device (once Volumio has been configured the first time via WEB UI).
Once configured on the app, even if the device is later moved to another network or room, Sound@home is able to recognize it automatically without any further configuration by the user.

volumio-player-music

soundhome-qobuz-volumioYou can install new plugins and configure them as well as all the different Volumio configuration options. It also supports Qobuz and has its own widget to facilitate the user experience. First, you will need to login to your Qobuz account via the Volumio UI and later you will be able to command Qobuz via the Sound@home App.

soundhome-volumio-music-player

It allows you to rearrange the queue of your songs by simply dragging and dropping them.
In the next version to be released soon, it will also support the “swipe left” and “swipe right” gesture to switch between sections faster.music-player-hifi
Currently it doesn’t allow streaming the same song on multiple devices; but when it becomes available at Volumio, works will be done to have the same functionality in the Sound@home app.  Soundhome-volumio-playerFor additional help, you can find some “How To” videos in the official Sound@home Youtube Channel
Of course, we cannot end the post without introducing the great mind behind the project. In his own words, Diego told us a couple of things about himself:

I’m a simple person, passionate about Hi-Fi music and IoT. Even if I’m an engineer the Sound@home project is just one of the ways to express my passion for technology and the possibility the technology can simplify and enjoy our life.

In the past, I was also a DJ and at that time I started to love Hi-Fi music and all the related world.

I think everyone should have the possibility to enjoy the music they love in a simpler and economic way, especially the Hi-Fi music that will give a difference. Volumio is one of the possible solutions and Sound@home will permit to spread more the Volumio knowledge on the market.

I’m alone at the moment on developing the Sound@home and until I can I will continue to improve it.

In the past, there was a stop on Sound@home improvements due to the fact a new baby came into my life. He completely fills my life with his happiness, joy and a lot of stuff to manage 🙂 but now I’m back with more energy to be spent on my dream, bringing hopefully it to a new level.

The new version of the App will always include new services or new possibilities of control! Stay tuned…

Are you ready to try it out?

Wondering which mobile apps can be the perfect companions for your Volumio? Here they are!

Since Volumio features its integrated WebUi, some people may argue that we don’t need any app. But what if those apps would extend and improve some Volumio capabilities? What if they made just your favourite music Player better?

Well, today we’ll give you an overview of the best Android and iOS apps for Volumio:

Official Apps

Even though using apps with Volumio is by any mean optional, both Android and iOS Volumio apps offer a nice bonus in ease of use: they will automatically find your Volumio device and show the Playback User Interface in all its full-screen glory.

They offer the capability also to set up a fixed IP address to bind to (useful if the auto-search fails or if you want to use mainly one device) and the Android app even comes with a notification facility to quickly interact with your Volumio.

To get the Volumio official apps just click on the links below and select your platform!

Sound@home for Volumio

Not only this was the first and most loved companion app for Volumio, developed by Digix. What makes this app special is that allows a super easy configuration of your Volumio (it will automatically connect to your wireless network of choice), and allows to control easily a multi-room Volumio setup. Altough this does not feature synced playback is just great to play your favourite music in all the rooms of your home.

Welcome Home

Welcome home is an Android application that lets you start playback of a music playlist in one of your Volumio devices, as soon as your device connects to the wifi network. It has been developed to play your favourite music as soon as you come back home. A nice welcome back home!

Configuring Welcome Home is fast and easy. You are guided through a wizard where Volumio devices are searched in your network, their playlists downloaded and shown for selection. When configuration is completed the automatic playback is activated. Multiple configurations can be created so multiple playbacks can be triggered.

Welcome Home is an Android application that can be downloaded from Google Play for a small fee. Money requested for the application will assure that no advertising or in app purchases are going to be introduced in the future. Furthermore, Welcome Home for Volumio has been developed by Massimiliano Fanciulli, one of the core Volumio contributors, so getting his app is a nice way to express him gratitude for the amazing work he’s doing on Volumio.

Open Source multi room Audio system with Volumio and Android…

Gens,

one of the new features that you may have noticed on Volumio is multi room audio system support via sound@home, the brand new, shiny, uberfantastic app made by fellow Volumio contributor Diego Tafuto.

This app (available on google play) does a great job of being a remote client for Volumio. I must actually admit that it behaves generally better than the native Volumio’s WebUi on mobile phones. Here’s a first screenshot:

En_player_menu

So you got plenty of playback options right into main screen, I must admit this is pretty straightforwarding! Furthermore, you are also able to configure Volumio, with most of the otpion you may find on it’s native WebUi. So definetely a good work, Diego!!!

Then, the real candy. The veterans of RaspyFi may know that one of my dreams was to make it suitable for multi room audio system playback, well, after an year he finally did it! You can configure Volumio to serve 5 different locations, they could be rooms, floors or whatever. Just place five different Volumio powered devices, connected to the same network, whenever you want, and add them to sound@home:

En_Camere_menu (1)

Then you can select which position to sound what, or even to sync them alltogheter:

En_Camere_menu_nexus5

Fantastic, isn’t it?

But let’s put apart some enthusiastic announcements, and let’s stop and think it  on for a while. Personally, I believe that with Volumio and sound@home is finally possible to build a multi room audio system at a cost of a fraction (and I mean a little, little fraction) of commercial solutions. Just multiply the cost of your favourite Volumio powered device, and you got your quote.
Some say it sounds really good also…

So, I’ll let you judge by yourself and leave you with some few words from Diego:

Hi, my name is Diego,  also known as digx.
Why I decided to develop something like Sound@home?
Simply my passion brought me to know Michelangelo’s RaspyFi and Volumio projects; so I thought that this could have been the best starting point for achieve my dream to develop an home system.

At the end we successfully started a great collaboration with results you can see today.

Sound@home is based on the assumption that when every kind of tool or application is developed,
the first impact users have is on how they can control it.
Here comes the well known sentence: “Power is nothing without control!” …
This is why Sound@home Android application is born.

With Sound@home application you can now control the Volumio OS to spread your favourite Music and Radio to your home.
But more, you can use Volumio with multiple devices to have a Multi Rooms system thanks to Sound@home.
Sound@home will permit you to configure multiple devices with Volumio with very simple and intuitive UI and automatic configuration.
You will simply control each of your room preferred music just with your Android phone or Tablet.
You need to try it to enjoy it; so try to downlaod on your phone/Tablet and feel free to give me any feedback at: digx@hotmail.it

So, what are you wating for ? You can find sound@home on Play or hit that QR!qrcode (5)

Let us know what you think about Volumio + sound@home multiroom audio system via comments below, or discuss it on the sound@home forum thread!
